Container modification guide

Personnel doors, roller shutters, windows, insulation, lining and electrics: what can be fabricated, and how our fixed-price quotes work.

What can be changed

A shipping container is a self-supporting steel box, so almost anything can be added as long as the corner posts and roof rails keep doing their structural job. Common work, roughly in order of how often we are asked for it:

  • Personnel doors, single or double, with lock furniture
  • Roller shutters and up-and-over doors for vehicle or forklift access
  • Windows, with or without security bars and shutters
  • Partition walls to split one container into two lockable halves
  • Insulation and internal lining in ply or steel sheet
  • Electrics: consumer unit, sockets, lighting, external hook-up point
  • Ventilation grilles, whirlybirds and louvres
  • Racking, shelving and workbenches
  • Repaint in any RAL colour, plus signage and vinyl
  • Container joins, where two or more units become one larger space

Things worth deciding before you ask for a price

  • Base container: size and condition grade. Cutting one-trip steel gives a cleaner finish.
  • Which wall each opening goes in, and roughly how far along it.
  • Whether the unit needs to stay watertight and lockable when unattended.
  • Whether power will be a permanent supply or a temporary hook-up.
  • Whether it will be occupied by people, which changes insulation and ventilation.

What structurally matters

Cut-outs remove steel, so large openings are framed and reinforced as part of the work. A container with a wide shutter in a side wall is no longer stackable or shippable as freight even though it is perfectly sound as a building. If your unit may ever need to be shipped again, tell us at quote stage and we will keep the modifications within cargo-worthy limits.

How our quotes work

Modified units are priced per project because material and labour vary with the specification, so they are not sold at a checkout price. Use the quote form: pick the container you want as the base, tell us the changes, and you get one delivered figure covering the container, the fabrication and the haulage. Delivery stays free, and sales tax is shown separately before you commit.

Fabricated units are built to your specification, so they are not covered by the change-of-mind return window once work has started. Faults and anything that does not match the agreed specification are always on us — the detail is on the returns page.
